A tradition is in the works: the Annual Meeting of the United Methodist Society of MV is always a most enjoyable event.
On Saturday, June 27, 2009, Armen Hanjian called this year’s meeting together at around 11:00 AM. He provided a succinct prayer and facilitated efficiently the rest of the business meeting. Key, as is true every year, was the presentation of the scholarships awarded to outstanding young people living on Martha’s Vineyard who are either deeply involved in higher education or are preparing to take that plunge. Chris Leon, who will begin his final year as an undergraduate in the fall, was unable to attend – he wisely chose presence at his sister’s wedding that very day. Kia Minor, at the other end of the spectrum, will try out the role of Freshman this year. Both were awarded $1000 and spirited rounds of applause.
A certificate was displayed demonstrating that the Reverend Susan Heafield is now an Honorary Member of the Society. All were grateful for the hours, energy and support she has given this group. She was already off to Pennsylvania, moving to the next phase of her life; the certificate will be sent to her.
Karen Rego, already known on the Island as a master chef and cuisine creator, once again, with the help of loyal assistants, provided a sumptuous soup, salad and dessert luncheon. (One salivates at the memory.)
Finally, the exciting program for which the Society Annual Meeting is becoming famous, occurred. This year, Rick Bausman, leader of the Drum Workshop, Inc. told the guests about his extraordinarily worthy group, which is becoming a global endeavor. His enthusiasm and vision were contagious. Then he invited people to join him at a series of drums and proved the joy that could be found in creating music together. It really was fun!
Those of you who didn’t come to the Annual Meeting of the Methodist Society of MV this year – plan to come next year. You won’t be sorry; the tradition of a splendid event seems to be established.
